China Eastern Airlines is a Chinese airline headquartered in Shanghai, founded in 1988 and a member of the SkyTeam alliance. Its main hub is Shanghai, with Pudong and Hongqiao airports, and it also has a hub in Beijing and regional hubs in Xi'an and Kunming. The fleet numbers more than 800 aircraft, and the airline's own network covers more than 200 destinations. From Kazakhstan, China Eastern flies from Almaty to Shanghai Pudong three times a week.

  • Baggage allowance

    On flights between China and Central Asia, Standard Economy and Flexible Economy include one checked bag of up to 23 kg, Basic Economy has no free checked baggage, and Business Class allows two bags of 32 kg each. Economy cabin baggage is one 8 kg piece plus a personal item.

  • Flight check-in

    Online check-in on the China Eastern website is available from selected airports and closes 60 minutes before departure on international flights. Bags must be dropped at least 60 minutes before departure, and gates close 15 minutes before, or 20 at some airports.

  • Changes and refunds

    Change and refund rules depend on the fare, and the fee on when you apply. A change costs the fare difference plus a fee, and if the new fare is lower the difference is usually not refunded. On a non-refundable fare, only taxes and fees for unused segments are returned.

  • Meals on board

    Under its general conditions of carriage, China Eastern offers free drinks or meals on board according to its own standards. Passengers who need a special meal cannot check in online and must check in at the airport counter on the day of travel.

  • Eastern Miles programme

    Eastern Miles is the China Eastern loyalty programme. Points earned on flights can be redeemed for award tickets on China Eastern and partner airlines and for upgrades. Silver, Gold and Platinum status is awarded for the number of segments or qualifying miles over 12 months.

  • Mobile app

    The China Eastern app for iOS and Android lets you buy tickets, choose a seat and check in, change, refund or upgrade a booking, and order in-flight internet. The iOS version is available in English and Russian.

  • From Kazakhstan, China Eastern Airlines flies nonstop from Almaty to Shanghai, with three flights a week landing at Pudong airport. From its Shanghai hub the airline flies to Seoul, Tokyo and Bangkok, among other cities. The schedule changes by season, and current flights show up in the Freedom Travel search.

  • Citizens of Kazakhstan do not need a visa for trips to China of up to 30 days: the visa-free regime has been in force since 10 November 2023 and also covers transit. The flight from Almaty lands at Pudong (PVG), the main China Eastern airport in Shanghai, where you can connect to Seoul, Tokyo, Bangkok or Hong Kong. A visa is required to work or study in China.
