Kostanay is a city in northwestern Kazakhstan. According to the researcher I.I. Kraft, its name translates as "the camp of a Kazakh clan or tribe". The city is located by the Tobol River.

Kostanay is located on the Turgai plateau: here the summer is hot with almost no precipitation, and the winter is cold.
