The main way to travel is a connection in Almaty through to Oskemen, followed by a road journey to Zaysan of roughly 450 km. There is also a second scenario: travel overland from Kokshetau to Astana (around 300 km) and fly to Oskemen from there — the capital has noticeably more flights to Oskemen.

When comparing options, look not only at the fare but also at the arrival time in Oskemen: the road leg is long and is best started in the first half of the day. Sometimes it makes more sense to spend the night in Oskemen and set off for Zaysan in the morning.
