Petropavlovsk represents the far northern point of Kazakhstan, located 40 kilometers from the border with Russia on the territory of Western Siberia. The city is situated on the right bank of the Ishim River, or Esil. It is the longest tributary of the Irtysh.     On the bank of the Ishim there is an incredible staircase into the river, built into the bank. The staircase is now slightly ruined, but it can still be seen from the left bank of the river.
