London is renowned for its historical landmarks. Since their school days, everyone knows about Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, and the Tower of London. But London is also famous for its museums, of which, according to some sources, there are more than 240. Among the most popular are:
- The British Museum;
- The Natural History Museum;
- Madame Tussauds Museum;
- The Sherlock Holmes Museum.
It is somewhat inaccurate to call the British Museum one of the most popular, since it is the country's main museum. It cannot be compared to any other. Its collection consists of priceless exhibits from many countries and different eras. Visitors take particular interest in the Egyptian collection, considered one of the largest in the world. The ancient Greek sculptures are well worth seeing. To explore all of the museum's most fascinating departments, history lovers will need more than one day.
The Natural History Museum showcases nature and its development through its collection. The collection is impressive in size: the number of exhibits is around 80 million. The Dinosaur Gallery is appealing to visitors. It is also worth seeing the collections of plant and animal specimens gathered by Darwin and brought back by explorers and pioneering ship captains. The museum building itself, built in the Romanesque style and covered with terracotta tiles, deserves special attention.
Almost all tourists consider it their duty to visit Madame Tussauds wax museum. It is the largest and has branches in 10 cities around the world. The wax sculptures of famous people look lifelike. The collection is constantly being expanded with new exhibits, lookalikes of outstanding contemporaries.
The Sherlock Holmes Museum is located, of course, on Baker Street. The flow of visitors never ceases. Many believe that the detective they have come to love is a real person. The building has several floors housing the office of the sleuthing genius, Mrs. Hudson's room, and a room with wax figures of other characters from Conan Doyle's stories. There is also a shop where you can buy souvenirs.
